Postal Service Honors Eugene Nichols for Over 50 Years of Service

USPS Clerk Eugene Nichols

LAKE CHARLES, LA —  As part of the United States Postal Service's "For the Long Haul" initiative, we are proud to celebrate Eugene “Gene” Nichols, a dedicated clerk who has faithfully served the Lake Charles community and United States for over 50 years. Eugene's unwavering commitment and exceptional service have made him a beloved figure with his postal family and he will be missed as he retires on Friday January 30, 2026.

"For the Long Haul" is an initiative designed to honor the remarkable dedication of long-serving postal employees like Eugene, who have become integral parts of the Postal Service. Over the years, he has developed lasting relationships with his co-workers, going above and beyond to ensure he treats everyone he meets with care and reliability.

Eugene Nichols, a U.S. Navy veteran, began his career with the Postal Service in March of 1980, as a Manual Distribution Clerk, quickly establishing himself as a model employee. He held multiple positions, including clerk, letter carrier and motor vehicle operator. Nichols joined the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) and rose through the ranks starting as a Union Steward to President of the Southwest Louisiana Local.

“Gene’s commitment and dedication through the years resulted in safe and very acceptable working conditions for many employees. His selfless service and loyalty will forever be a part of his legacy with the Postal Service, as well as the United States Navy,” stated a co-worker.

"Gene Nichols embodies the spirit of the Postal Service with his dedication and heartfelt service," said John Jordan, Lake Charles Postmaster (A). "We are proud to honor him as part of our 'For the Long Haul' initiative and celebrate the positive impact he has made on so many lives in Lake Charles.”

The United States Postal Service has been an essential part of American life since its inception. Committed to providing reliable, affordable mail service to every address in the country, USPS plays a crucial role in maintaining communication and commerce across the nation.
