Boston, MA- After 107 years, the Postal Service’s Operation Santa® finally has Santa’s official postal address:

Santa Claus

Each year, thousands of letters sent to Santa from children and families arrive at Post Offices around the country. Most letters ask for toys and games. Some ask for basic necessities. Some ask for help for themselves and their loved ones. Santa urges letters to be sent as soon as possible for inclusion on the new digital platform.

The Postal Service’s Operation Santa makes it possible for individuals and organizations to adopt these letters and send responses and thoughtful gifts in Santa’s place.  With a growing online platform, now more generous community members can not only read and enjoy children’s letters to Santa but also adopt a letter of a child who may have special requests this holiday season.

The Postal Service’s digital program has expanded to 15 cities across the country, up from seven in 2018:

Austin TX Chicago ILGrand Rapids MIOrlando FLSacramento CA
Baltimore MD Cleveland OH Los Angeles CAPhiladelphia PA San Juan PR
Boston MADenver CONew York NY Phoenix AZ Washington DC

The digital cities were chosen based on, but not limited to, overall interest in the program, community need, and a mix of geographic locations.

Starting November 18th generous postal customers around the nation can browse, read and adopt letters to Santa online from the digital locations at USPSOperationSanta.com.

USPS Operation Santa History

The Postal Service began receiving letters to Santa Claus more than 100 years ago; however, it was in 1912 when Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock authorized local postmasters to allow postal employees and citizens to respond to the letters — this became known as Operation Santa. By the 1940s, letters poured in and the program was expanded to the general public.

Charitable organizations, corporations and regular folks all participated, writing response letters and sending thoughtful gifts. The practice continues today and has been expanded to a digital adoption process using letters from select American communities this year.
