Background:

From mail carriers to retail associates to equipment operators, USPS employees are working around the clock during the 2021 peak season. One local employee delivering the holidays for America is Shyrell Rodgers who enjoys helping customers ship and mail their packages in time for the holidays.

“All our employees work hard to process and deliver the mail in time for the holiday. I’ve been fortunate to be part of a team that cares about and is dedicated to serving our customers. And if we have a little fun at the retail window and bring a smile to our customers during this hectic time, that’s even better,” said Rodgers.

The busiest mailing, shipping and delivery week is Dec 13 – 18, when the Postal Service will process and deliver nearly 2.3 billion greeting cards and packages this week. USPS predicts that employees will collect, process, and deliver between 850 and 950 million packages and a total of 12 billion pieces of mail this peak holiday season, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Rodgers will demonstrate how to properly package an item for shipping and provide tips for mailing packages and cards.

The Postal Service plans all year for the peak holiday season. This year’s preparations include leasing 7.5 million square feet of additional space across more than 40 annexes to handle the increase in the number of packages being mailed. The Postal Service is also currently hiring for more than 40,000 seasonal positions to help process and deliver the mail.

Since April, the Postal Service has installed 112 new package sorting machines, reflecting the “Delivering for America” plan’s $40 billion of planned investment over 10 years.

2021 Key Holiday Dates and Deadlines:

  • Dec. 17 – First-Class Mail (greetings cards and letters)
  • Dec. 18 – Priority Mail
  • Dec. 23 – Priority Mail Express

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
