Dewitt Post Office Letter Carrier to Receive Postmaster General Hero Award for Saving a Customer’s Life

Dewitt, MI — United States Postal Service City Carrier Assistant Margo Powers will receive the highest honor a postal employee can get – a Postmaster General (PMG) Hero Award for an act of bravery while on the clock.

District Manager Don Dombrow, Jr., Michigan 2 District, will present the PMG Hero Award at a ceremony at the Dewitt Post Office, 901 S Bridge St, Dewitt, MI 48820 on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at 8:00 a.m.

Powers was delivering on her route in Dewitt, MI during the holiday in December when she heard a customer yelling for help. When she got closer she noticed the customer had fallen on the ground and was bleeding near her head. The customer was laying there in the cold for nearly two hours when Powers happened upon her. Powers couldn’t lift her by herself, so she called 911 and waited with the customer until emergency help arrived.

The grateful customer sent Powers a card thanking her for her efforts.

The Postmaster General Heroes program
The Postmaster General Heroes’ Program, which was created in 2003 to commend USPS employees who go above and beyond the call of duty in a variety of situations, such as assisting lost children, getting help for sick or injured customers, spotting fires, and more.

More than 5,500 individuals, known as PMG heroes, have been recognized through the program, which reflects a simple, yet powerful, idea: Because they know the habits of their customers and the rhythms of their communities, Postal Service employees are often the first to notify emergency personnel and render aid when something is wrong.
