Background:
H.R.8026 - To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 825 West 65th Street in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as the "Charles W. Lindberg Post Office."
Charles W. Lindberg, a United States Marine and native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, made history as a member of the first group to raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Lindberg enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and soon volunteered for the elite Marine Raiders unit.
During the Battle of Iwo Jima, Lindberg served as a flamethrower operator with 3rd Platoon, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division. On February 23, 1945, he was part of the 40-man combat patrol led by First Lieutenant Harold Schrier that captured the summit of Mount Suribachi and raised the first American flag. Just days later, on March 1, Lindberg was wounded by a sniper and evacuated from the island. For his bravery, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal.
After his honorable discharge in 1946, Lindberg returned to North Dakota, married, and later moved to Richfield, Minnesota, where he worked as an electrician for 39 years. A dedicated storyteller, Lindberg spent many years sharing his experiences of the first flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, often speaking at schools to educate future generations about his wartime service. He was one of the last surviving members involved in the iconic flag-raisings on Iwo Jima.
