Background:
Spc. Sterling William Wyatt was born and raised in Columbia, Missouri. Early on, Sterling showed his commitment to serving his community by being an active participant in his youth group and operating the soundboard at church. Through his service and hard work, he was quite an accomplished young man: he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, a first-degree black belt in taekwondo, and a certification as a Certified Nurse Attendant all before graduating from high school in 2009. Soon after, he decided to continue his lifestyle of service by joining the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McCord, Washington.
Spc. Sterling William Wyatt answered a call to service and he served his country until he received a higher calling on July 11, 2012 while on patrol in Kandahar, Afghanistan; he was 21 years old. His vehicle was attacked with an enemy improvised explosive device. His awards and decorations include the Medal of Valor, Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, and Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, NATO Medal, Certificate of Achievement, and Combat Infantryman Badge.
Spc. Wyatt’s dedication to serving his community and country were a testament to his faith and family, especially his loving parents Sterling R. “Randy” and Sherry Hawk Wyatt. While he is no longer with us on earth, his spirit and memory will never be forgotten.
On December 6, 2018, legislation to designate the Post Office building located at 511 E Walnut Street in Columbia MO, as the Specialist Sterling William Wyatt Post Office Building was signed into law by President Donald Trump.
Specialist Wyatt’s legacy of service to his country is permanently honored with the dedication of the Columbia MO Post Office.
