USPS Holiday Prep Underway in Jackson, MS

Jackson, MS — As part of the Delivering For America 10-year plan, the Postal Service is modernizing its operations to accommodate increasing customer demand for package delivery, which has grown significantly over the past several holiday seasons. A $40 billion investment in new technology includes the addition of new package sorter equipment at the Jackson, MS, Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC).

Media representatives are invited to view firsthand the Single Induction Package Sorter (SIPS) operation on Thursday, October 13, at 1 p.m. (Central) at the Jackson, MS, P&DC, 401 E South Street, Jackson, MS 39201-9998. Jackson, MS, Plant Manager Henry Dominguez will host the tour and will be available for interviews.

The SIPS can process 2,100 packages — ranging from one ounce to 20 pounds — every hour. Since January of last year, the Postal Service has added 270 new package sorting machines to the postal network, increasing its package processing capacity to 60 million packages per day this holiday season.

“These investments will ensure that the Postal Service is well positioned to handle peak mail volumes and provide customers with the predictable, reliable service they expect and deserve this holiday season and beyond,” said Dominguez.

Media representatives are asked to RSVP by Close of Business (COB) Wednesday, October 12, to Strategic Communications Specialist Debra Fetterly at debbie.j.fetterly@usps.gov or 954-527-2941 (office) or 954-298-1687 (cell).

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
