Belmar NJ Post Office Building to be Dedicated in Honor of Dr. Walter S. McAfee

BELMAR NJ – The Belmar NJ Post Office Building will receive greater distinction after a ceremony dedicating it to former resident, Dr. Walter S. McAfee. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2019 on 13th Avenue, next to the Post Office.

The ceremony will include members of the McAfee family, as well as U.S. Congressmen Chris Smith (4th District), Belmar Mayor Mark Walsifer, and U.S. Postal Service, South Jersey District Manager James Drummer.  Members of the community and friends are invited to attend in a show of support and respect.

Legislation to dedicate the Belmar Post Office building to Dr. Walter S. McAfee was introduced by Congressman Smith and signed into law by President Trump on March 23, 2018. The plaque, to be unveiled at the ceremony, will be permanently mounted inside the Post Office lobby.

Dr. McAfee was a scientist, educator and adviser to the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command and the Fort Monmouth community. He helped pioneer space exploration. Dr. McAfee made the mathematical calculations that enabled a team of scientists to bounce the first radio signals off the moon’s surface.

The Postal Service does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses; it relies entirely on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
