Background:

First Lieutenant Carlton Hand was born October 14, 1917, and served heroically during World War II in the 88th Infantry Division. His valor was recognized with numerous decorations, including a Silver Star, a Purple Heart, and two World War II battle stars. A lifelong resident of Rio Grande, New Jersey, the Rio Grande Post Office Building will be dedicated in his honor.

Military service and awards

  • Unit: Hand served as a Technical Sergeant in the 349th Infantry, 88th Infantry Division.
  • Combat: He fought against Nazi forces in Italy, where his bravery earned him a battlefield commission.
  • Silver Star: His citation for the Silver Star describes his gallantry in single-handedly assaulting an entrenched German position, killing its defenders despite intense enemy fire.
  • Purple Heart: He also received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat.
