Background:
Millions of cards, letters and packages move through mail processing facilities in New Mexico every day, and that number rises during the holidays. Each night, hundreds of dedicated employees sort that avalanche of mail using automated equipment, which provides some great visuals for both current and future holiday-related stories.
The Postal Service expects to deliver about 800 million packages during the holiday season. In total, the Postal Service will deliver nearly 13 billion letters, cards, and packages from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve.
The Postal Service is ready to deliver holiday greetings and gifts to more than 159 million addresses nationwide. The busiest mailing week this season will be Dec. 16-22, when more than 2.5 billion pieces of mail, including greeting cards and packages, are expected to be processed and delivered. Dec. 16 is expected to be the busiest day for usps.com with more than 8.5 million customers predicted to visit on that day alone.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
