Postal Service Announces Final Decision to Relocate Chimayo, NM, Post Office

In accordance with 39 C.F.R. 241.4, this constitutes the United States Postal Service’s final decision to relocate retail services from 724 State Highway 76 to 205 A Juan Medina Road. The new location is within three miles of the previous site. This relocation is necessary due to a fire that destroyed the current Post Office.

In February 2024, a letter was sent to the town commissioners and a postcard sent to the community asking for input and public comment. The feedback was reviewed and the decision to relocate the Post Office is moving forward.

The Postal Service anticipates providing the same services at the new location that were previously provided at the existing location. Additionally, the Postal Service plans to continue services at the Santa Cruz Post Office until the replacement facility is open and operating as a Post Office.

While the Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the Chimayo community, the Postal Service properly considered community input, and this decision is consistent with Postal Service objectives. Postal Service operations are not supported by tax dollars. To be self-sustaining, the Postal Service must make decisions that ensure it provides adequate and affordable postal services in a manner that is as efficient and economical as possible.
