The Riverhead Post Office and Congressman Lee Zeldin To Remember An American Hero on MLK Day

This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Postal Service and the office of Congress­man Lee Zeldin will pause to honor the memory of American Hero Private First Class Garfield M. Langhorn, on the 50th anni­versary of his death, in a ceremony at the Post Office which bears his name.

Frank Calabrese, District Manager of the United States Postal Service’s Long Island District.
Congressman Lee Zeldin, U.S. Representative of New York’s 1st Congressional District.
Venezia Lewis, Niece of P.F.C. Langhorn.
Kevin Goree, Postmaster of Riverhead, NY
Mike Pankowski, County Commander, Suffolk County American Legion.

Background:

On January 15, 1969, P.F.C. Langhorn was killed in action, at the age of 20, while serving in Vietnam. In 1970, President Richard Nixon posthumously awarded P.F.C. Langhorn the Medal of Honor for the brave act that saved his fellow soldiers, but cost him his own life.

Public Law 111-179, rededicating the Garfield M. Langhorn Post Office Building, was signed on June 9, 2010. An official commemorative ceremony was held by the Postal Service on September 27, 2010.  

Monday’s ceremony will take place in the main lobby area of the Riverhead Post Office. Congressman Zeldin will present an American Flag from the U.S. Capitol Building to the family of P.F.C. Langhorn.
