City Carriers Karen La Porta and John Steinburgh will be recognized for their driving expertise and attention to safety when they receive the National Safety Council’s Safe Driver Award. It is the trademark of the expert driver and is recognized as the nation’s highest award for professional safe driving.

Reaching this pinnacle requires a safe attitude that entails driving one million miles or 30 years without a preventable incident. Steinburgh will be inducted into the Million Mile Safe Driver Club.

For La Porta, her 45 years of safe driving qualifies her for the 2 Million Mile Safe Driver Club.

The nation’s 31,000 plus Post Offices are linked by nearly 230,000 vehicles — the world’s largest civilian fleet. More than 300,000 letter carriers and truck drivers log more than 1.5 billion miles annually when delivering to America’s 159.9 million addresses.

The Postal Service does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses; it relies entirely on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
