AMSTERDAM, NY — Postal employees regularly go beyond the call of duty to protect the lives of the people they serve, including elderly or disabled customers. In fiscal year 2020, the Postal Service recognized 186 heroic employees.
In October 2020, while on his rounds, Letter Carrier Michael Cyrek heard a customer calling out for help. That is when he found a woman had fallen in her garage and was unable to get up on her own. Mr. Cyrek rendered assistance and helped her up from the floor.
This week, Michael Cyrek was honored with the Postmaster General’s Hero Award for going beyond the call of duty. This award is presented to employees nominated for rescuing customers from emergencies and dangerous situations. They receive commendation letters from the Postmaster General.
Postal carriers are out delivering every day to every address. In 2020, the Postal Service served over 161 million delivery points, nationwide. It is this unique set of circumstances that often finds them at the right place, at the right time.
