John Tortorice Becomes Brooklyn’s 48th Postmaster
BROOKLYN, NY – With an oath to protect and defend the constitution, the United States Postal Service welcomed John Tortorice as the new executive postmaster of Brooklyn in an oath of office ceremony held at Fort Hamilton Army Base.
Postmaster Tortorice now officially leads a team of nearly 4,500 postal employees who deliver to 2.7 million Brooklynites. The Tortorice postal team delivers to every business and residence at one of 990,000 official mailing addresses and staffs all post offices in the 39 zip codes across King’s County’s 70.8 square miles.
The ceremony featured co-workers, mentors, and family, along with a special appearance by Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), who represents the south Brooklyn area.
“I have come to know so many of our postal workers, our letter carriers, and clerks. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with all of you — and to also support the very important Postal Reform Act which was passed in Congress this past year,” said Rep. Maliotakis.
This event marks the second occasion Tortorice has taken an oath of office while at Fort Hamilton. The Gulf War Veteran shared, “It is amazing to think that 33 years ago in September, I was right here at Fort Hamilton, an 18-year-old swearing into the Navy. Look at me now!”
Tortorice began his postal employment as a Long Island temporary letter carrier in 1993. He joined management in 1998 and is now the 48th person to fill the role of Brooklyn postmaster, a position created in 1803.
“We have made tremendous improvements in Brooklyn, moving from near last to top three in the country. That is the result of my incredible team and the leadership from Postmaster General DeJoy’s Delivering for America plan,” said Tortorice, who has acted as postmaster since 2021.
