USPS Clerk Martha Lane Honored for 65 Years of Service to the Oklahoma City Community

USPS Clerk Martha Lane honored for 65 years of service

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — On July 9, 1960, Martha Lane began her distinguished career at the United States Postal Service as a distribution clerk in Oklahoma City, earning a starting wage of $2.16 per hour. Leaving college life behind, she entered a predominantly male workforce, alongside only two other female employees. Her tasks included sorting mail by hand, one letter at a time, years before automated sorting equipment entered the workplace.

Over the years, Ms. Martha has held several key positions, including general clerk, accounting clerk, procurement assistant, property/supply assistant, Officer In Charge in Langston, OK, and Postmaster of the Nicoma Park Post Office. She currently serves as a Sales & Service Associate at the Oklahoma City Britton Station, where she continues to serve Oklahoma City customers with unwavering dedication.

Throughout her career, Ms. Martha has witnessed transformative changes in the Postal Service, noting the introduction of automated equipment, and the growing number of women in the workforce. In 1960, she was one of only two women in her unit – a stark contrast to the diverse workforce she sees today.

Outside of her postal duties, Ms. Martha is an accomplished pianist at her church and a dedicated volunteer at the airport. She is the proud mother of two sons and believes her greatest achievement has been the privilege of continuing to work full-time, a testament to her commitment and passion to serve.
