PITTSBURGH —The Postal Inspection Service, working in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies, will implement a temporary security measure to increase public safety for the 2019 Pittsburgh Marathon scheduled for Sunday, May 5.

As with previous Pittsburgh marathons, the United States Postal Service will either take out of service, or lock access to, mail collection boxes (see attached list of collection boxes) along the marathon route beginning Friday, May 3. Blue collection boxes along the marathon route will be pulled or locked on Friday and Saturday for the race on Sunday, May 5.

Postal officials emphasize this is a precautionary security measure only.  Boxes will be returned to service by close of business Monday, May 6.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
