Background:

In 1829, the Stourbridge Line had a trial run over the Lackawaxen River. Spectators came to witness the new era in commercial transportation.

In 1869, a gold spike was driven into the last railroad tie to complete the transcontinental railroad.

On Aug. 8, 2019, the Stourbridge Line will be hosting a special ceremony at the Wayne County Visitors Center in honor of these two historic events. Attendees will be able to purchase rides on the 190th Lion Anniversary Express.

The Honesdale Post Office will have a temporary station at the event from 1 to 4 p.m. Customers can purchase the new Transcontinental Forever Stamp (issued on May 10, 2019) and obtain a pictorial postmark, designed by local artist Jerry DeCrotie.

Pictorial postmarks are collectors’ items, making excellent souvenirs of special dates and events. Only items bearing uncanceled postage stamps at the applicable First-Class Mail rate are eligible for postmarking.

Collectors and out of town requests can be mailed in, with a self-addressed stamped return envelope, for 30 days to Honesdale Railroad Station, Honesdale Post Office, 830 Main Street, Honesdale, PA 18431.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
