Background:
Leonard Alfred Funk, Jr. was born in Braddock Township, Pennsylvania on August 27, 1916. His life would lead him to become one of the most highly decorated soldiers to ever serve in the United States Army, as well as one of the greatest leaders to ever serve in combat for the United States Army.
Leonard A. Funk joined the Army in June 1941, and by January 29, 1945, was serving as a first sergeant in Company C, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division.
After jumping into Normandy on D-Day with the 82nd Airborne Division, he earned the Distinguished Service Cross during Operation Market Garden and the Medal of Honor during the Battle of the Bulge. Additionally, Funk earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.
Funk was discharged in June 1945. After the war, he worked for the Veteran's Administration and retired in 1972. Funk passed away on November 20, 1992, in McKeesport, PA at the age of seventy-six.
