BUTLER, PA — The Postal Inspection Service is reminding customers to beware of artificial intelligence scams. Scammers are now using artificial intelligence, or AI, tools to make their schemes appear more believable.
AI can generate lookalike photos, clone voices and compose wording in texts and emails to build trust with a victim. This can result in romance scams, investment scams, illegitimate tech support calls and fake emergency requests from friends and family.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Butler City Police Department will host a discussion:
Thursday, March 26 at 11 a.m.
St. Michael’s Social Hall
432 Center Ave.
Butler, PA 16001
A 30-minute presentation will begin at 11:15 a.m. with a question-and-answer session afterward.
Residents are encouraged to call 911 and ask police if a payment request seems legitimate.
If the scam involved the U.S. Mail in any way, report it to postal inspectors www.uspis.gov or call 877-876-2455. The Inspection Service’s National Consumer Protection Weekpage has more information. Residents are reminded that USPS does not solicit cash or gift cards.
