Pickens Post Office to be Dedicated in honor of Specialist Four Charles Johnson

What:

U.S. Congressman Jeff Duncan (SC-3), in partnership with the United States Postal Service, will host a dedication and plaque presentation ceremony for the renaming of the Pickens Post Office to the “Specialist Four Charles Johnson Post Office”. The United States Postal Service welcomes the public to attend this free event.

Background:

SP4 Charles Johnson, Jr. was the son of Mr. Charles G. and Essie Jamison Johnson, Sr. He was born in Pickens, SC on August 4, 1940, and killed in action, March 30, 1966, in the Republic of Vietnam.

He attended the Pickens County Training School, Pickens, SC and was a 1958 graduate of Clear View High School in Easley, SC. He was a member of Griffin Ebenezer Baptist Church, Pickens, SC. After completing high school, he enlisted in the United States Army with the military parental consent of his mother.

SP4 Johnson was an avid reader and was only 17 years old when he began his military career. He was the oldest child. His mother stated, “Charles was a playful boy. He was never in trouble: he was happy all the time…”

SP4 Charles Johnson was never married and was one of three brothers serving in the Vietnam war at the same time. SP4 John H. Johnson received wounds from a high explosive bomb, SP4 Leroy Johnson served without any injuries, and unfortunately, SP4 Charles Johnson lost his life.

His basic training was at Fort Benning, Georgia, and he was a paratrooper. He was killed in action by a gunshot wound of the chest,” when hit by hostile automatic weapons and mortar fire”, while serving in Vietnam.
