Postal Service Opens Up Mail Processing Operation Center

Only opportunity to view behind-the-scenes holiday operations USPS will deliver more than 200 million parcels this week

What:

The Dakota Central Processing and Distribution Center will handle more than 17.5 million pieces of mail and half a million parcels this holiday season. They will open their doors to the media for one evening only.

We will show high-speed letter sorting operations and large bins of parcels being separated and sorted on the most advanced equipment in the country.

This industrial environment provides great visuals of high- tech, high-speed processing, automated systems, and employees moving equipment, mail and package sorting.

The facility is a 68000 square feet and with approximately 62 employees.

Deadlines:

The Postal Service recommends customers in the U.S. observe the following mailing and shipping deadlines to ensure that deliveries are made in time for Christmas:

Dec. 11 – Military, First Class and Priority
Dec. 14 – Ground Delivery
Dec. 16 – Military Express Mail
Dec. 19 -  First- Class Cards and Letters
Dec  20  –  Priority Mail
Dec  22  – Priority Mail Express

Holiday Facts and Figures:

  • The Postal Service is projecting a more than 8% increase in total mail volume this holiday season, including a total of 900 million packages.
  • More than 16 billion total pieces of mail and packages will be delivered between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve.
  • We are delivering on Sundays too. More than 8 million packages will be delivered every Sunday this month.
  • Busiest mailing, shipping and delivery week for greeting cards & packages is Dec. 17-23 when we expect to handle more than 2 billion cards, letters and packages.  29 million packages per day.
  • Dec. 17 will also be the busiest day for usps.com with more than 8 million customers predicted to visit on that day alone.
