WHY:
The Postal Service is preparing for the higher delivery demands of the 2021 holiday
peak season through increased hiring of delivery and plant personnel, the leasing of millions of additional square feet of sortation facilities, and the installation of new processing equipment to accommodate higher volumes and customers’ evolving mail and package delivery needs. Since April, the Postal Service has installed 46 of 112 new package sorting machines, reflecting the Delivering for America plan’s $40 billion of infrastructure investments over ten years.
As part of this plan, a new Single Induction Package Sorter (SIPS) is now up and running in the LaVergne package support annex. The SIPS can process 3000 packages every hour (ranging from .1 oz. to 20 lbs.).
Last year’s holiday season was like no other. Customer demand for package delivery grew nearly 48 percent year over year (Oct. 1 – Dec. 31, 2019 to the same timeframe in 2020), as the pandemic drove a surge in online shopping. Amid record holiday volumes and employee shortages due to the pandemic, the Postal Service delivered a record 1.1 billion packages. Last holiday season, the Nashville Music City Annex processed 16.4 million packages between Nov. 21st to Dec. 31st.
Installations are continuing across the country as the Postal Service plans to have new equipment running at 112 facilities by the 2021 peak holiday season. Additionally, the Postal Service is making a concerted effort nationwide to hire new employees ahead of the 2021 peak holiday season.
The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its.
