Background:
James Tate III was selected as Postmaster of Memphis, TN on March 11, 2023. As Postmaster, Tate oversees delivery and retail operations at a total of 24 stations, branches, and finance units, serving the second-largest city in Tennessee. A team of 818 dedicated individuals serves an estimated population of more than 633,000 people. Memphis delivery personnel service a total of 374 city routes and 57 rural routes, delivering more than 234 million pieces of mail and packages in FY22. With an annual operating budget of just over $77 million, the Memphis team, in the last fiscal year, generated over $86 million in revenue.
A 28-year postal veteran, James began his career as a Flat Sorter Machine Operator at the Jackson, MS P&DC in 1995. He has, over the years, held a wide range of managerial positions in mail processing, retail, and delivery. These include Supervisor, Distribution Operations and Manager, Distribution Operations at the Jackson, MS P&DC.
In the retail and delivery function, James served as, Manager, Customer Service in Jackson, MS and Houston, TX, and held the Manager, Post Office Operations position in both the Mississippi and Louisiana Districts. Just prior to arriving in Memphis, James was Postmaster of Baton Rouge, LA
A retired veteran with extensive combat experience, including leading combat operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan, James has spent nearly eight years serving on various military deployments since his postal career began. James received the Bronze Star for combat actions and numerous other awards and decorations during his distinguished military career.
Tate and his wife of 27 years have two daughters. Kourtney is a senior nursing student at the University of Southern Mississippi and Kayleigh is a junior at Mississippi State University majoring in civil engineering.
