Background:

Senator Thelma M. Harper was a transformative trailblazer, with the distinction of being the first Black woman elected to the state Senate, the first Black woman to chair a major senate committee, and the longest-serving woman Senator in Tennessee history.

Harper’s signature statement of wearing hats became symbolic of her unwavering commitment to her community, the advancement of women’s equality, seniors, and children. This designation honors her legacy of public service and the profound impact she had on Nashville and the entire state of Tennessee.

Harper’s love for her community always brought joy. This is evident through her "Kids are Special Too" annual Hunt, which celebrated its 38th year in 2023, and this legacy continues through the Senator Thelma Harper Transformative Foundation. How fitting that this Post Office, on a street that Harper sponsored to rename from Metro Center Boulevard to Rosa L. Parks Boulevard, will now bear her name. This designation honors her legacy and her profound impact on Nashville and the entire state of Tennessee.

The unveiling of the designation plaque will occur at the Metro Post Office immediately after the ceremony at the Looby Community Center.
