Bastrop Post Office to be Dedicated in Honor of Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh

The United States Postal Service will join Congressman Michael T. McCaul (R-TX) at the dedication of the Bastrop Post Office in honor of U.S. Army veteran, military hero and Bastrop native Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh. This event is free and open to the public.

Background:

Public Law No. 118-201 designates the post office located at 1106 Main St. in Bastrop, Texas, as the Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh Post Office.

Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh was born and raised in Bastrop, Texas. He joined the U.S. Army in 1948 and served his country as an Army paratrooper and Special Forces soldier from 1948 to 1972, that included seven years in combat during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Waugh received numerous military honors, including eight Purple Hearts for combat injuries—ranking him third among those who have received the most Purple Hearts in U.S. history. Other honors include four bronze stars, the silver star and the CIA intelligence star.

After retirement, Waugh joined the U.S. Postal Service before again serving his country as a paramilitary operations officer in the Central Intelligence Agency. He eventually returned to his hometown of Bastrop and passed away in April 2023 at the age of 93.

This post office dedication is a testament to the legacy Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh left behind - that ofa true American hero whose courage, patriotism, and service will never be forgotten.
