Richfield Man to Retire After More Than 69 Years of Transporting the U.S. Mail as a Highway Contract Route Driver

He never failed to deliver the mail in career that spanned eight decades

What:

A brief retirement party honoring 91-year-old Richfield, UT, Highway Contract Route Driver Jack Lund, who is retiring after more than 69 years of transporting the U.S. Mail. He started in 1949.

In a career that has spanned eight decades, Lund never failed to deliver the mail despite severe mountain weather, vehicle breakdowns and other challenges. Richfield area postal employees who have worked with Lund for years report he's not only reliable, he conducts himself with the utmost honesty and integrity - and he's done it all with a smile. Lund’s tireless dedication in transporting the mail in a timely manner to and from Post Offices in Utah (mostly between Provo and Richfield), is inspiring.

Several Richfield area postal employees who know and love Jack will be in attendance at the event and will be available for interviews.

Background:

Lund is one of many Americans who have served as a USPS contractor, including legendary aviator and contract airmail pilot Charles Lindbergh. Since its inception, the Post Office Department, and now the Postal Service, has used contracting as an integral part of serving the postal needs of the American public. The first known example is a contract with a stage coach driver who carried mail between Portsmouth, NH, and Boston, MA, in 1773. The famed Pony Express riders were contractors. Lund is a shining example that the Postal Service today continues to effectively partner with contract carriers to efficiently transport and deliver the mail.
