Honoring U.S. Navy Veteran John Henry Turpin
BREMERTON — The U.S. Postal Service will honor U.S. Navy veteran John Henry Turpin by dedicating the Bremerton WA Post Office in his name in a ceremony to be held Monday, Feb. 14 at 1:30 p.m.at the post office located at 602 Pacific Ave.
Mr. Turpin was a Chief Gunner’s Mate in the U.S. Navy. He was born in 1876 and died in 1962.He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1896.. A survivor of the explosions on the USS Maine (1898).and the USS Bennington (1905), he became a Chief Gunner’s Mate in 1917.
He was qualified as a Master Diver and was employed as a Master Rigger at the Puget Sound Navy Yard in Bremerton.
U.S. Congressman Derek Kilmer sponsored the legislation to dedicate the post office in honor of Mr. Turpin.
