Manages USPS Services for Indianola Community
Indianola, WA — Geovany Miguel is no stranger to hard work. He put himself through school while not only maintaining a career with the Postal Service, but also continually looking for job growth opportunities.
Miguel was born in Guatemala and moved to the United States within the last 15 years. He began his postal career in Port Angeles as a postal support employee which gave him the flexibility to also go to school, where he earned his Bachelor of Applied Science in applied management degree from Peninsula College.
As Postmaster, he oversees three employees and the retail office where he is supporting the Postal Service’s 10-year “Delivering for America” plan, “by providing quality service and delivering every single package and mail piece to customers in a timely manner.”
Prior to joining the Postal Service, Miguel worked as a part-time banquet server while attending school. He realized the serving job wouldn’t help him achieve his goals or help with tuition as much as a postal job could.
“I chose the USPS because it was a more stable job opportunity, greater career growth and advancement, as well as a fair wage. When I was in college, I needed to pay my college tuition, and working a minimum wage job would not be able to pay for my tuition. Working for the USPS gave me the flexibility to complete my degree while also being able to afford my tuition. After I graduated, I decided to stay with the USPS because I realized further career growth related to my college major (business management).”
In the eight years since Miguel became a postal employee, he said getting promoted to a regular clerk at the Indianola Post Office has been his most rewarding position so far.
“Becoming a part-time flexible clerk gave me the opportunity to supervise in other offices to get a wider exposure to different experiences in the field of management. My supervising experience and my educational background offered me new career opportunities such as having the proper skills and abilities to becoming a Postmaster.” He says is also gave him the chance to get to know most of the customers and built a great relationship with them.
Miguel is just as active on his days off as he is during the work week. In his spare time he enjoys running, playing soccer, going to the gym, reading, painting and drawing.
