Appleton, WI — The Postal Service held a dedication ceremony at the Appleton Post Office on August 23, 2023, in honor of Firefighter Mitchell Lundgaard.

Mitch Lundgaard was a 14-year veteran of the Appleton Fire Department when he tragically lost his life in the line of duty.  It all began with a regular medical response at a city transit hub. Following his resuscitation from a drug overdose, a man turned hostile and began shooting at the police officers and firefighters who had recently revived him. Sadly, Mitch died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Speakers for the Mitchell Lundgaard Post Office Renaming Event included Lindsey Lundgaard, Congresswoman Mike Gallagher, Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford, Appleton Postmaster Amy DeBauche and Manager Post Office Operations Bradley Koenig.

“Today we come together and take another step. It may seem like a small step but it’s an important step, to ensure that Mitch’s life and legacy are never forgotten by establishing the Mitch Lundgaard Post Office here in Appleton” said Congressman Mike Gallagher.

“As we unveil the new name adorning this Post Office, we do more than remember a fallen firefighter – we celebrate a legacy of valor,” said Manager Post Office Operations Bradley Koenig. “Firefighter Mitchell Lundgaard's name will now grace this building, a constant reminder of his extraordinary service and an inspiration for generations to come.”

On November 17, 2022, Congressman Mike Gallagher introduced House Resolution 9335. Unanimous support from a state’s congressional delegation is needed for the movement of naming bills to the floor of the House and Senate and is then signed by the President of the United States to become law.

The Postal Service worked with the office of Congressman Mike Gallagher to host the event.
