Background:

The Postal Service will present the Postmaster General Hero Award to Bluefield Letter Carrier Robert Williams for his heroic actions.

On January 13, City Carrier Robert Williams noticed one of his customers had not picked up their prescription package/mail for a few days. He knocked on her door, and there was no response. He contacted the neighbor to see if they had seen her lately. He was still concerned, so he called his manager who then contacted local law enforcement. Police entered the home, and they found the customer deceased inside. The family was notified. William’s concern for his customer’s welfare, and his knowledge of her habits helped the customer to be discovered, aiding the extended family during a tragic situation.

This isn't the first time Robert has helped customers on his route and been aware of his surroundings. A couple of years ago, he was delivering mail on his previous delivery route when he noticed smoke and flames coming from an apartment building. He ran to the building and went door to door, notifying residents so they could get out. No one was injured, and the building damage was confined to part of the building since the fire department was notified early on into the fire.

The Postal Service does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses; it relies entirely on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
