South African Post Office advises that the government has tightened restrictions through Jan. 15 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some business sectors and public facilities have been closed and international trade is limited. The post will continue to dispatch mail to countries if the relevant air carrier is operating. It will also continue to receive mail for delivery in South Africa. It will not be possible to meet delivery standards for all mail classes. The post is again operating under force majeure conditions.


South Africa’s post advises that international inbound postal operations are now running as normal. Outbound services to certain countries have resumed based on availability of flights.


The South African Post Office advises that the government lockdown has been extended by another two weeks from April 17 to April 30, 2020, owing to the outbreak and rapid spread of COVID-19 and the increasing number of infections in South Africa. Consequently, it is declaring a situation of force majeure in relation to the standards affected as a result, including the quality link to remuneration for letter post and parcel post.

Normal services are expected to resume on May 4, 2020.

All other conditions set out in March 26, 2020 alert remain unchanged.


Temporary Service Suspension The U.S. Postal Service received notice that various postal operators are no longer able to process or deliver international mail or services originating from the United States due to service disruptions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result, the Postal Service is currently unable to accept items destined for South Africa at any Post Office or postal facility location, effective April 3 until further notice. Customers are asked to refrain from entering items addressed to South Africa into the USPS system effective immediately.

These service disruptions affect Priority Mail Express International® (PMEI), Priority Mail International® (PMI), First-Class Mail International® (FCMI), First-Class Package International Service® (FCPIS®), International Priority Airmail® (IPA®), International Surface Air Lift® (ISAL®), and M-Bag® items.

For any returned item bearing a customs form, the Postal Service will, upon request, refund postage and fees on mail returned due to the suspension of service. For all other returned items not bearing a customs declarations form, the Postal Service will, upon request, refund postage and fees on mail returned due to the suspension of service, or the sender may remail them with the existing postage once service has been restored. When remailing under this option, customers must cross out the markings “Mail Service Suspended — Return to Sender.”

Unless otherwise noted, service suspensions to a particular country do not affect delivery of military and diplomatic mail.


South African Post advises that exchanges of both inbound and outbound mail are currently blocked due to suspension of many flights as part of measures taken to curb rapid spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). All post offices nationwide will be closed while the country is on lockdown, and all mail classes will be delayed. A situation of force majeure situation is invoked until April 17 or until further notice.
