For the Record: Media Corrections on Postal Service Voluntary Retirement Incentive Offer from Jan. 13, 2025

April 3, 2025

There have been significant instances of media misreporting regarding a voluntary employee retirement incentive offer implemented by the U.S. Postal Service on Jan. 13, 2025.

FACT: On Jan. 13, 2025, the U.S. Postal Service announced that we entered into a mutually agreed upon initiative with the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) and the National Postal Mail Handers Union (NPMHU) regarding a voluntary early retirement (VER) incentive, set to conclude on April 30. The Postal Service estimates that approximately 10,000 employees will voluntarily participate/opt-in to this initiative. Final participation numbers will be released once the initiative timeframe expires.

Contrary to numerous reports, this VER is not linked to any agreements with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). There have been no recommendations, decisions or outcomes related to any DOGE interactions at this time.

We urge media outlets to ensure accuracy in their reporting and to verify information before dissemination. The U.S. Postal Service remains committed to transparency and accountability, and we will continue to provide updates as the VER initiative progresses. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
