It is important for USPS® sites with stormwater basins to follow required procedures to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. This may include permits as well as design and specific maintenance and operating standards.
Stormwater basins are human-made depressions that manage stormwater runoff to prevent flooding, erosion, and discharge of pollutants to surface waters. Retention basins typically have a permanent pool of water, while detention basins temporarily store water after a storm.
Routine preventive maintenance is required to keep stormwater basins functioning properly. This includes managing surrounding landscaping, conducting regular inspections, and taking prompt corrective actions for any issues identified. An inspection checklist can be found at blue.usps.gov/sustainability/environmental/_docs/forms/form-sw-ret-det-inspectionchecklist.docx. The Facilities Response Line (855-444-6375) can assist with corrective actions involving non-routine repairs.
Sites with stormwater basins must adhere to the Postal Service Zero Discharge Policy, which prohibits the release of any pollutants into stormwater systems. Only light-duty lawn equipment may operate on embankments or in basins. Pesticides must not be applied within or directly adjacent to basins. Landscape waste must not be placed in basins.
