Vice President, Area Operations — Southern Area
Shaun Mossman was named vice president, Area Operations, Southern Area, in February 2016. He oversees all Postal Service operations — including mail processing, distribution, customer service, and administrative functions — in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, and parts of Georgia and South Carolina. The Southern Area encompasses over 640,000 total square miles of territory. He reports to the chief operating officer and executive vice president.
Mossman’s responsibilities include overseeing all operations at 6,324 postal facilities, including mail processing centers, retail and delivery units and managing a workforce of over 118,261 employees. The Southern Area has an operating budget of $10.5 billion. Each day, more than 226 million pieces of mail are collected, processed and delivered to over 32.6 million delivery points. In FY16, the Southern Area generated in excess of $10.9 billion in revenue.
Previously, Mossman served as vice president, Finance and Planning. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue and expense budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis and program evaluation. He was also instrumental in completing the Postal Service’s Fiscal Year 2016 Integrated Financial Plan.
Mossman’s strong operations background was developed through service in a succession of high-level positions, including manager, Operations Support, for the Western Area, and district manager of the Nevada-Sierra and Big Sky, Montana Districts. Under his leadership, these districts consistently ranked among the best in the nation in on-time delivery of overnight First-Class Mail and customer satisfaction.
Mossman began his postal career in 1987 as a letter carrier in Newport News, VA. Later, he held a number of top management positions in the Richmond, VA, District. Mossman also served as Colorado/Wyoming District Manager, Operations Programs Support. He has a degree in business administration from Strayer University, is a graduate of the Postal Service’s Advanced Leadership Program (ALP) and a certified Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Executive Green Belt
