Background:

Last year’s holiday season was unlike any other, for both USPS and customers alike. Demand for package delivery grew nearly 48 percent over the same period the year before, while nationwide, the American public relied on USPS to connect their holiday and essential correspondence as never before. The pandemic drove a surge in online shopping and e-commerce, creating a new level of ease for customers to shop from home. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the Postal Service delivered a record 1.1 billion packages during the holidays.

As a result of this greater customer package demand, the Postal Service relied not only on our infrastructure of package sortation machines, but also on manual by-hand sortation of packages. The installation of these much-needed package sorting machines will be a game-changer, allowing for 12 times the package sortation capability than manual sortation and a better, more reliable service to our customers.

As part of the 10-year plan to achieve financial sustainability and service excellence, the Postal Service is investing $40 billion on people, technology and equipment to modernize its operation and provide a world class service to customers, including the installation of 112 new package sorters throughout the country. One such machine, the Single Induction Package Sorter (SIPS) is now installed at the N. Houston PSA. These new package sorters will meet our customers’ evolving mailing and shipping needs and help achieve long term service improvements.

With this immediate investment, the Postal Service is prepared to deliver the holiday season.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
