DMM Revision: Electronic Indicators for Mailing Hazardous Materials

Effective January 21, 2024, the Postal Service™ will revise Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, Domestic Mail Manual (DMM®), section 503.1.4.1, to clarify Postal Service extra services available when mailing items containing hazardous materials.

The article titled “Publication 52 Revision: Electronic Indicators for Mailing Hazardous Materials,” which published in PB 22632 (9-7-23, pages 6–9), includes new Postal Service mailing requirements regarding using unique Service Type Codes (STC) and Extra Service Codes (ESC) for items containing hazardous materials. The new requirements limit the extra services available when items containing hazardous materials are mailed. As a result of these new requirements, the Postal Service is also revising DMM 503.1.4.1 to clarify that certain extra services and additional extra service combinations may not be available for items mailed containing hazardous materials.

Although the Postal Service will not publish this revision in the DMM until January 21, 2024, the standard is effective immediately.
