Effective November 14, 2024, the Postal Service™ is revising the Individual Country Listing for Afghanistan in Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, International Mail Manual (IMM®) to note that a new 6-digit postcode was developed to identify delivery zones in Afghanistan. This new postcode extension went into effect on October 1, 2024.
This revision is based on a formal request that Afghan Post (the designated postal operator of Afghanistan) made through the Universal Postal Union via International Bureau Circular 147, dated September 23, 2024.

[Add a new entry to read as follows (adding “1” before the first entry):]
2. Afghan Post (the designated postal operator of Afghanistan) requests that the mailer include the new 6-digit postcode on each item addressed to Afghanistan. The 6-digit postcode is an extension to Afghanistan’s current postcode, developed to individually identify each delivery zone within Afghanistan as follows: the first two digits of the postcode represent the province, the next 2-digits represent the city or rural district, and the last 2-digits represent the postal delivery zone. More information regarding the new postcode, including a search tool feature under Postal Codes, is available at afghanpost.gov.af. (To read the website in English, click on “English” in the bar at the top or the bottom of the page.)
