Last Friday, October 14th, honored one of the most popular and influential Representatives in the history of Northern California as the Petaluma Post Office was dedicated to former State Representative, Lynn C. Woolsey. Congressman Jared Huffman, who championed the bill that was signed into law by President Biden, led the ceremony to an audience that included many of Woolsey’s family members, Congressmen Mike Thomas, and representatives from both Congresswoman Pelosi and Congresswoman Lee’s offices.
The ceremony began with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by the Casa Grande High School Choir as well as the presentation of our national colors. Woolsey was a huge advocate for children and families championing legislation and reform that protected the rights of workers, military families, and promoted the expansion and improvement of childcare programs. She was also an outspoken opponent to the Iraq war after 9/11 and sponsored legislation to withdrawal U.S. forces from Iraq and Afghanistan.
“It took two of us to follow in the footsteps that Lynn left behind,” Huffman quipped, referring to himself and Thompson taking over after Woolsey retired.
Woolsey, unfortunately, was unable to attend the ceremony due to a fall the day before. However, her daughter, Amy Critchett, gave her speech just as Woolsey had written it. Critchett recounted how her childhood home was less than two blocks away from the historic post office, and how much her mother loved going there.
The elegant plaque is on display in the newly named Lynn C. Woolsey Postal Building located at 120 4th Street, Petaluma, CA, 94952.
The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
