A Million Miles and Still Trucking

Chicago Postal Service employee recognized for safe driving

Richard Scales

ORLANDO, FL — While many drivers might attribute their accident-free journeys to luck, Richard Scales, a Tractor Trailer Operator from South Suburban Chicago, knows that safety is rooted in experience and diligence. With 30 years on the road, Scales emphasizes that focus, attentiveness, and defensive driving are essential.

Scales has achieved the remarkable milestone of driving one million miles for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) without a single accident—enough distance to circle the Earth 40 times. To honor this significant accomplishment, he received a plaque from the National Safety Council and automatic lifetime membership in the prestigious “Million Mile Club.”

This award recognizes drivers who have reached one million miles or have 30 years of driving experience without a preventable motor vehicle accident, a notable achievement acknowledged by the National Safety Council.

“It means a lot to receive this award; I love what I do,” Scales remarked at a recent U.S. Postal Service Logistics Symposium. “Safety comes first. Be patient, don’t let anyone push you out of your comfort zone on the road, make sure to clean your windows and mirrors for clear visibility, and prioritize your health. You can’t fully enjoy the fruits of your labor if you don’t take care of yourself.”

The daily operations of the U.S. Postal Service rely on a vast network of dedicated individuals and advanced technologies that work together to collect, transport, process, and deliver the nation’s mail. Each year, USPS processes and delivers over 116 billion pieces of mail and packages, averaging more than 318 million pieces daily.

Logistics are fundamental to the Postal Service’s operations, utilizing a fleet of over 246,000 vehicles—one of the largest civilian fleets in the world—to ensure deliveries reach every address. Committed to sustainability, the Postal Service operates 30,673 alternative fuel-capable vehicles and is rolling out the much-anticipated Next Generation Delivery Vehicle across facilities nationwide.
