Mailing Highlights Dog Bite Prevention

Residents to receive postcard

Dog Bite Prevention postcard

HOPKINSVILLE KY – Beginning Tuesday, Apr. 16, 2019, Hopkinsville letter carriers will deliver a message on dog bite prevention to customers with an eye-catching postcard mailing.  The timing of this effort coincides with the Postal Service’s annual Dog Bite Prevention Week – and a recent severe dog attack involving a Hopkinsville letter carrier.

The postcard features a lenticular design, which is a shifting image of a dog that changes to attack mode when tilted.  The message on the postcard provides tips on how to keep family, neighbors, and letter carriers safe from dog attacks.

Tips include:

  • Place your pet in a separate room and close the door before opening the door to receive mail
  • Don’t allow your pet to roam outside of the home unleashed
  • Avoid allowing children to be handed mail in your pet’s presence, as this may be seen as a threat

Hopkinsville acting Postmaster Mary Isome explains the postcards are intended to bring attention to the ongoing issue of dog incidents, particularly unrestrained dogs, saying, “It is our hope the postcard will serve as a reminder for all residents to help prevent dog attacks.”

In 2018, 5,714 letter carriers across the country experienced dog bites or dog attacks.

The Kentuckiana District serves ZIP Codes 400-409, 411-427 in Kentucky and 471, 476-477 in southern Indiana.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
