What is a pictorial postmark? A pictorial postmark features words and graphics related to an event and is applied with a hand canceling device. (See example above.)
Even from the earliest days of the new nation, years before official postage stamps were introduced in 1847, handwritten and stamped town marks or postmarks were used to indicate the place and date of mailing.
For those not able to be present on Dec. 7 or 8, the public may request this special postmark by addressing their request to “Postmaster” at the address above. These will be available for 30 days after the event.
Additional news and information, including all domestic, international and military mailing and shipping deadlines, can be found at the Postal Service Holiday Newsroom at usps.com/holidaynews.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
