Background:

On December 21, 2018, legislation introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman Peter T. King, of New York’s 2nd District, was signed as Public Law No: 115-356 by President Donald J Trump, to designate the Brentwood Post Office as the “Army Specialist Jose L. Ruiz Post Office Building.

Army Specialist Jose L. Ruiz was born in Queens, New York on October 27, 1976. He was raised in Brooklyn and then moved to Brentwood, Long Island. He graduated from Brentwood High School in 1994 and then attended the New York Institute of Technology, becoming a computer network engineer.

Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, Specialist Ruiz was inspired to join the military. He later became a member of the elite Stryker Combat Brigade out of Fort Lewis, Washington. A true American hero, he was proud to be serving his country and was awarded nine prestigious medals for his courage on the battlefield, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Just two weeks before completing his tour of duty, Specialist Ruiz was killed in action in Mosul, Iraq on August 15, 2005.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
