New Postmaster of Jamaica Takes Oath of Office at Queens Borough Hall

NEW YORK — Jamaica Postmaster Dermot Tuohy was officially sworn-in at a ceremony at Queens Borough Hall on Friday, Oct. 21. Attending the event and leading the Postmaster’s Oath of Office was Postal Service Vice President of Retail and Post Office Operations Elvin Mercado.

Tuohy brings more than 28 years of New York City postal experience, beginning his career as a letter carrier in Valley Stream in 1994. Tuohy has held positions with increasing levels of responsibility, such as Far Rockaway Postmaster, Forest Hills Manager, Operations Manager and Manager Operations Programs.

He is supported by nearly almost 800 employees who work in 18 offices and five retail locations, across the borough’s seven square miles. He is now responsible for maintaining daily postal deliveries to 216,632 addresses, for over 660,000 customers.

Tuohy is a Marine Corps Veteran and long-time resident of Queens, NY. He graduated from Archbishop Malloy High School and calls Long Island City, Queens his home.
