Stay Back, Stay Safe! — A Message for Children

[Make the presentation light and fun. Even though this is a serious subject, children will respond to a friendly and approachable adult.]

Good morning boys and girls.

My name is [Name] and I’m your postmaster. [Tell the children what a postmaster is/does.]

I’ve got some awesome tips to share with you about how to stay safe when you see our mail carrier vehicles in your neighborhood. You’ve probably seen some of them driving around or parked near your home or school. These vehicles help deliver important letters and packages in our community, but guess what? We need your help to stay safe when we’re in your area.

Our Super Safety Slogan: “Stay Back, Stay Safe!

Remember this: “Stay Back, Stay Safe!” That’s your secret code to staying safe whenever you see our delivery vehicles nearby. And I’m going to show you some fun and easy ways to do it!

#1. Give Us Space — Stay Back!

Our drivers can’t always see you if you’re too close. Our vehicles have big mirrors, but they also have what are called blind sports, which are places where the driver can’t see you. So, what do you do? “Stay Back, Stay Safe!” If you’re walking, riding your bike, or playing near one of our vehicles, make sure you stay far enough away so the driver can see you.

#2. Never Play Around Parked Vehicles.

When our delivery vehicles are parked, it can be tempting to play around them or hide behind them. But this is dangerous! It’s important to “Stay Back, Stay Safe!” The driver may need to move the vehicle, and they may not know you’re there. Always keep your distance and play in safe areas like the park or your backyard, far away from parked vehicles.

#3. Wait for the Truck to Go.

If a delivery vehicle is stopped and then starts moving again, it’s really important to give it space and let it drive away first. Let’s say it together: “Stay Back, Stay Safe!” Always wait until the vehicle has gone before crossing the street or going near where it was parked. This helps make sure you stay safe, and the driver has enough room to maneuver.

#4 Look for the Drivers Wave or Smile.

If you need to cross in front of one of our delivery vehicles, always make sure you see the driver and they can see you. A good way to know when they see you is if you wave at them, and they wave or smile back to you. Once you know they’ve seen you, it’s safer to cross the road. But remember, you still need to “Stay Back, Stay Safe!” Always remember to stop, look both ways, and listen before crossing the street!

Remember our secret code: “Stay Back, Stay Safe!” You’re part of our safety team now! Every time you see one of our delivery vehicles say the secret code to yourself, “Stay Back, Stay Safe!” By doing that you’re helping keep everyone safe, including yourself.

Thank you for letting me speak to you today. Have a great and safe rest of the year!
