Stay Safe on the Road: Be Aware of Mail Trucks and Keep Everyone Safe

As part of our commitment to safe driving, the Postal Service wants to remind everyone to stay alert and share the road in a safe manner. Our vehicle fleet is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: over 168 million residences and businesses. We are part of the fabric of every community around the nation, helping to keep the mail moving and we need your help to keep everyone safe.

With more than 246,000 vehicles, one of the largest civilian fleets in the world, it’s likely you’ll see us on the road every day.

While the postal logo you recognize will remain the same, you may notice updated shapes and sizes of branding across our fleet. These changes reflect our commitment to innovation while maintaining the familiar identity you trust. The highlights of this update are our new zero-emission electric Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV), E-Transit, and other electric vehicles. We’re excited to share the refreshed look for our vehicles.

Whether we’re making deliveries, providing pickup services, or simply moving between locations, we’re working hard to ensure a safe and efficient journey for everyone.

Postal Service employees travel more than 1.2 billion miles a year to deliver mail. Our drivers are trained to follow safety guidelines and drive responsibly; however, road safety is a two-way street, and we ask that you also stay vigilant and practice safe driving habits when you are near our vehicles.

Here are some safety tips for drivers to follow:

n Give Us Space: Whether it’s a large truck or a smaller delivery vehicle, always leave plenty of room. Keeping a safe following distance gives you enough time to react to any changing traffic conditions, especially when passing or merging.

n Recognize Different Vehicle Sizes: The Postal Service has a variety of vehicles used to transport and deliver mail, each with unique driving characteristics. Larger trucks require more distance to safely stop and make wide turns, while smaller vehicles can make quicker stops and maneuver easily. Being aware of different behaviors can help you adjust your driving and avoid any sudden surprises on the road.

n Watch for Stopped Vehicles: Our vehicles need to make stops for deliveries. Always be cautious when approaching a stopped postal vehicle as there might be a driver loading or unloading, or the vehicle may need to re-enter traffic. Slow down and be prepared for sudden movement. If you’re driving too close, you may not have enough time to safely stop.

n Avoid Blind Spots: Larger trucks have larger blinds spots, especially on the rear and sides, while smaller vehicles also have areas that are hard for the driver to see. To stay visible, avoid lingering in these spots, particularly when passing or merging. If you can’t see the driver’s mirrors, they likely can’t see you. Always make sure you’re in a position where the driver can see you, and give extra space, when possible, to reduce the risk of accidents.

n Stay Focused: Distractions can lead to accidents. Staying focused and alert on the road helps protect everyone.

n Use Extra Caution in Neighborhoods and Residential Areas: Our vehicles operate in residential neighborhoods where children, pets, and pedestrians can be more frequent. Drive with extra care in these areas and be ready to slow down or stop for both our vehicles and other road users.

Keep an eye out for our newly modernized vehicles on the road. Though they may look a little different, we’re still delivering the same reliable service you know and depend on. Our fleet is here to serve you, and by working together, we can make sure everyone gets where they need to go safely. Let’s stay safe on the road.

Together, we can ensure safer roads for everyone. For more information about how we’re promoting motor vehicle safety, go to usps.com.
