San Francisco Carrier reaches milestone, drives two million accident-free miles without ever leaving the city limits

San Francisco Carrier Michael Nunez

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — When San Francisco carrier Michael Nunez joined the Postal Service in 1966, “These Boots Were Made for Walking” peaked on the charts and for over half a century Michael has made it his mission to prove his USPS vehicle was made for driving. With a keen level of focus and concentration Michael has proudly reached two million accident-free miles.

On Friday, October 29, 2021, at 8:00 a.m., at Pine Street Station, 1400 Pine St, San Francisco, CA 94109, Michael will be inducted into the National Safety Council’s “Million Mile Club.”

Since joining the Postal Service Michael has witnessed many changes including the trucks he’s operated. His favorite is the two ton he is operating now which he has used to serve the same route for the past four years along the same route at Pine Station.

“Safety means a lot to me I always have to be concentrated on my surroundings,” said Michael of his achievement. He encourages new carriers to have the same focus and diligence to stay aware and focused while driving.

Imagine driving the equivalent of 334 times across the country or 40 times around the earth without ever leaving the city limits and not so much as a fender bender. The achievement is even more remarkable when you factor in the hazardous road conditions, gridlock, rural terrain, and the constant alertness for careless drivers along the way.

“Our carriers deliver with safety as a priority,” said California-1 District Manager Jagdeep Grewal. “The truly remarkable achievement by our Pine Station carrier exemplifies how postal employees continue to deliver on the promise of delivering their best every day with care, courtesy and concern for the safety of others.”

Michael will be presented with a plaque from the Safety Council and automatic membership in the prestigious National Safety Council “Million Mile Club.” The million-mile award is a lifetime enrollment, and it is given to drivers who have accumulated one-million miles or 30 years of driving without being involved in a single preventable motor vehicle accident, a truly remarkable achievement according to the National Safety Council.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
