Avinesh Kumar

Avinesh Kumar will become the 32nd San Francisco Postmaster, dating to 1849 when John W. Geary was the first Postmaster.  On Friday, June 24, 2022, at 12:00 p.m., Kumar will take his oath as San Francisco Postmaster at the San Francisco Processing and Distribution Center, 1300 Evans Ave. Vice President WestPac Area Retail & Delivery Operations Eduardo Ruiz will administer the official oath of office.

Kumar began his postal career in 2004 as a city carrier in Fremont.  He had a strong desire to make a difference.  He entered the postal management ranks in 2014 and effectively changed the culture and environment in the offices that he managed by engaging all employees as he addressed safety, attendance, and performance concerns. His previous assignments include Manager Post Office Operations, Postmaster of Lafayette and Oakland, and Officer-in-charge in Hayward, Santa Clara, and Berkeley, CA.

As San Francisco Postmaster, Kumar heads one of the largest city and retail operations in the United States with more than 1300 employees, 12 delivery units, 32 retail stations and the daily distribution of mail to 26,918 residential and business Post Office Boxes and approximately 430,000 addresses on 690 city carrier delivery routes in 941 ZIP code.

“My goal is to provide outstanding customer service to the communities served by the San Francisco Post Office and to contribute to the overall success of the Postal Service,” said Kumar. “As outlined in our USPS Delivering for America plan, we’re modernizing and continually adapting to the evolving needs of our customers. I’m very much aware of the vital role we play in connecting neighbors and the community to the nation.”

Kumar replaces former San Francisco Postmaster Abraham Cooper, who moved on as District Manager in Los Angeles.
