Kirkland, Washington’s newest postmaster, Tyrone Barrant, joined the Postal Service as a carrier in Trenton, New Jersey more than five years ago.

During his tenure as a postal employee, Barrant has served in many roles including as a carrier and supervisor in Trenton, NJ and most recently the Mercer Island, Washington postmaster.

As postmaster, Barrant oversees more than 100 employees, 65 delivery routes, and a Post Office with more than 1,400 Post Office Boxes (PO Boxes).

Three years ago the Postal Service implemented the “Delivering for America” (DFA) 10-year plan to achieve financial sustainability and service excellence. Barrant is doing his part by informing customers and his staff of the improvements happening and those yet to come.

“I am Delivering for America by playing my part in ushering a new era for the Postal Service by informing all my staff and customers of all the new and exciting changes that are coming to the Postal Service and being a servant leader [in Kirkland].”

He says the most rewarding position in his career so far has been as a supervisor, which helped him better understand how the Postal Service works and allowed him to “contribute to the overall success of the operation which in turn furthered my career.”

Within the last five years, Barrant says he’s seen many positive changes at the Postal Service, such as upgrades to delivery vehicles and the technology used by carriers.

Barrant held a few jobs prior to joining the Postal Service, including managers at various retail stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. But he wanted something more meaningful in his career choice, “I love being a servant to others and customer service is my passion.” He also contributes the many opportunities for professional growth and training for his choice of USPS as an employer.

In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his three children, traveling to other countries, learning about new cultures, trying new food, and watching his favorite basketball team, the Philadelphia 76ers, play. He also regularly donates food and clothing to his local charity.
